Upcountry Maui
Like mountains? You’ll love the Upcountry region of Maui. This area is situated on the slopes of Haleakala itself, with houses perched in the trees, peeking out to glorious views of the ocean below. There’s agriculture, friendly people, wine, sheep, crisp mountain air, tropical trees, and amazing sunsets. Don’t miss Haleakala National Park.
- Makawao. This used to be the tiniest of towns, but has grown in the past few decades to become a wonderful mix of old-farm world charm and mdern ideas. There’s the Nui Noeau Visual Arts Center to visit.
- Kula. Three thousand feet above sea level, almost in the clouds, you’ll find Kula, a dreamy peaceful mountainous remote community facing the ocean far below. Vegetation thrives, and you’ll find something growing at every turn, whether it be the sweet Maui onion or lush tropical flowers you’d have to pay top dollar for on the mainland. B&B’s are the best here, to get away from it all.
