South Maui
Beaches, anyone? If you’re planning to laze in the sun by the water or go for a swim, South Maui is the hottest place to go, and it has little rainfall so you can plan that perfect beach day or entire beach vacation. Cacti used to grow here, but now it’s resort central, and almost always in the 80’s. Here’s a brief summary of the neighborhoods of South Maui:
- Makena. Wild and natural, undeveloped except for the Maui Prince Hotel, Makena is 2,500 acres of undeveloped coastline backed up by hardened lava flow from Haleakala’s last activity in 1790. There’s a lava trail that leads around the deserted shoreline past fish camps and sunken craters holding gazillions of tropical fish, empty beaches and the best day you ever had on vacation.
- Kihei. Budget travellers will love this funky beach neighborhood of condos and shops. You can get a latte and head to the beach from your affordable accommodations, returning to town for sushi and not break your budget.
- WaileaUltra-delux resorts on black lava shoreline with dollops of sandy beaches await visitors to Wailea, where you will break your budget, but oh, what a way to go. Fantasy luxuries are everywhere, so if you can imagine it, you’ll probably find it here. There’s also a coastal trail and some of the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever see.
