Maui
Getting Around
If you need visitor information when you arrive, and you’re driving from Kahului Airport, drive on Hiway 36, also called the “Hana Highway” to Kaahumanu Avenue (route 32) in Wailuku, then to Wili Pa Loop (ask for directions), where you’ll find the Maui Visitors Bureau.
Driving around Maui requires close attention a map, even though there are very few major roads. This is because there are more road names than there are roads, so while you think you may be driving on one single road, the name may have changed under you even though you encountered no intersections and no sharp turns. The main roads go:
- around the coastline of the Haleakala volcano
- around the coastline of the Puu Kukui volcano
- up to the top of Haleakala
- to Hana
- to the beaches (good for whale-watching but keep your eye on the road)
- to Wailea (be careful of speeding and dangerous passing styles)
Mopeds are a popular and fun way to get around town and to the beaches, and you can rent them for around $30 a day. They don’t go super fast, so they’re no fun on the highways, and you’ll just creaate a buildup of cars behind you, which is no fun for anyone.
