Maui
Central Maui
You’ll probably visit the flat central part of Maui, since it holds the main airport and most of Maui’s residents. It’s windy here, and there’s lots for budget travellers, like hostels.
- Wailuku. This is where lots of real residents of Maui live and work…you’ll see people actually wearing ties and suits. It’s still relaxed and pleasant, however, and worth a visit if you have time. There’s the Bailey House Museum and funky wooden architecture, including bungalow style and a Frank Lloyd Wright to boot. Go here to get a great view of Haleakala crater in the distance, or some great budget food.
- Kahului. No reason to go here unless you want to see what a Maui-style strip mall or a subdivision looks like. This is where life gets down to business, and people are just trying to live their lives in the retail and commercial center of Maui.
